The Lobo reservoir designed to supply water to the Daloa city populations (Central west of Côte d'Ivoire) is facing the phenomenon of eutrophication due to the agricultural plots located upstream the reservoir inputs. Studies have highlighted the reservoir pollution and sedimentation problem. This study was initiated to provide a simple and effective solution to the eutrophication problem. The main objective is to determine the potential optimal dimensions of a grassed strip in order to limit the eutrophication phenomenon of the Lobo reservoir. The sizing of this grassed strip was done using the VFSMOD model. The flow from the pollution source plots was simulated and integrated into the model. The different scenarios tested from the band width variation have concerned the return periods of 1 and 2 years. The results obtained revealed that for the one-year return period, the grassed strip to be installed should have a width of 12.70 m in order to reduce by 70% the flow entering the strip considering the diffuse runoff over a length of 300 m. For the two-year return period, a width of 22.95 m should be required with the same length. The scenarios showed that a grassy strip width equal to 3 m should allow a reduction of 75% of upstream sediments.

Human activities and climate change are currently dominant processes that affect hydrological processes, resulting in alterations in water and sediment flows. Evaluation of the settling velocity of suspended solids is a critical parameter in modelling sediment transport. In this study, we investigated seasonal changes in suspended solids’ settling velocity and trapping capacity in the presence and absence of water turbulence on a dam reservoir. Using key parameters such as flow rate, mean settling velocity (V¯), critical velocity (vc), suspended solids concentration, ratio V¯/vc, and shape parameter ‘r’, the trapping capacity on the dam reservoir on the Lobo River in a tropical region was estimated. The results show that, considering the settling velocity of suspended solids, following the Gamma distribution law remains an innovative solution proposed to evaluate the trapping capacity in water reservoirs. The results show that the mean suspended solids settling velocity V¯ is well above the median rate V50%. For a parameter V¯/vc ≥ 4, there is an increase in the trapping capacity of the water retention. As established, a large proportion of the sediment is trapped. Furthermore, for a parameter V¯/vc ≤ 4, a decrease in the trapping capacity of the Lobo River water reservoir is observed.

Built to improve water supply for the populations of the city of Daloa, the Lobo River reservoir is no longer functioning properly due to human activities near its reservoir. This study, based on a 2D hydrodynamic model, carried out with the Mike21 HD software, allowed the reconstruction of the flows in the Lobo River reservoir. The results of the simulation indicate that the hydrodynamic model could reproduce the variation of water levels at the free surface of the reservoir. Also, the results are very sensitive to the boundary conditions of the model but also to the initial conditions. The results of the influence of pumping on the dynamics of water levels in the Lobo River reservoir showed that water levels are not significantly modified by pumping (less than 1.3 mm). Therefore, pumping has little impact on the hydrodynamics of the Lobo River because the pumped flows are much less than the inflow to the reservoir.
