Estimating willingness‐to‐pay for health care: A discrete choice experiment accounting for non‐attendance to the cost attribute

Abstract: Rationale, aims, and objectives: The literature suggests that discrete choice experiments (DCEs) are a preferable method for estimating willingness-to-pay (WTP) values, as they may avoid some biases often observed in contingent valuation surveys, such as protest and strategic behaviour. However, the choice studies have demonstrated that attribute non-attendance may be a serious issue that leads to biased WTP estimates. Method:A DCE was used to estimate patients' WTP for dental care at the dental school clinic.… Show more

“…Cost could be considered as an attribute and thus an indirect WTP could be assessed. Even if some authors argue that WTP in DCE survey is less sensitive to strategic or protest bias (43), some others emphasize that cost attribute could be neglected or even ignored by respondents in favor of other attributes (44)(45)(46), thus leading DCE to provide a biased WTP. To our knowledge, there is no evidence showing the superiority of DCE to CV in WTP estimation.…”

“…The payment mechanism [market fee] is the main denominator in the two facility ANA classes. The payment mechanism in DCEs is usually the one subjected to non-attendance [44,45]. It is clear that the fee is the source of disutility for the respondents and probably the most hypothetical component of many of the DCEs.…”
