Estimating wetland biodiversity values: a choice modelling application in Vietnam's Mekong River Delta

Abstract: A lack of information on environmental protection values, especially non-market values, has contributed to wetland degradation in the Mekong River Delta. To fill this information gap, this study uses choice modelling to estimate the biodiversity protection values of Tram Chim National Park, a typical wetland ecosystem of the Delta. The estimated net social benefit of a proposed protection program ranges from USD0.52 million to USD1.84 million. This suggests that the program's implementation would improve socia… Show more

“…In a CV study, Loureiro and Ojea (2008) find almost identical WTP for different population increases of the guillemot, except when they explain that it is common elsewhere; then WTP decreases with increasing population levels. Do and Bennett (2008) find a positive WTP for increasing populations of a crane species, but do not report for different population levels.…”

“…Conservation values are likely high net social benefits (i.e. the biodiversity protection value of a typical wetland in the Mekong Delta was estimated from USD 0.52 million to USD 1.84 million [39]). Furthermore, the improvement of conservation can lead the development of tourism services -one of important economic sectors (i.e.…”
