Estimating two-dimensional angles of arrival in coherent source environment

Abstract: In this work, estimating two-dimensional (2-D) angle of arrival for radiating sources in a coherent environment is studied. The concept of spatial smoothing is first extended to a rectangular planar array and a 2-D search function is formed t o estimate the source directions. To avoid performinga 2-0 search, an approach based on two onedimensional (1-D) searches is also discussed. This approach uses rows and columns of the rectangular array to perform I-D searches. To match the data obtained, a 2-D verificatio… Show more

“…The element spacing along X and Y axes is δ. Assuming that the DOA of the ith source s i (t) is denoted by the azimuth and the elevation angles (ϕ i , θ i ), the received signal of the mnth sensor can be written as (Yeh et al, 1989) …”

“…Therefore, a 2-D antenna array is usually required for the purpose of adaptive beamforming, especially for mobile users near the base station. Although, there have been many 2-D direction estimation algorithms, such as the 2-D coherent MUSIC algorithm (Yeh et al, 1989) and the 2-D MUSIC-ESPRIT algorithm (Yin et al, 1989), they are not suitable for DOA estimation in local scattering channels. In this paper, we extend the GAM model of 1-D uniform linear array to the generalized plane-type array manifold (GPAM) model which can be employed to estimate a 2-D source direction in a multipath reflection scenario from scatterers.…”

“…In [6], Zoltowski et al propose a closed form 2-D unitary ESPRIT algorithm for solving the estimation problem either in the element space or in the beamspace. In addition, Yeh et al [7] introduce the spatial smoothing 2-D-MUSIC algorithm for the estimation of the 2-D DOA of coherent sources. By taking advantage of the block spatial smoothing technique to span the signal subspaces, both the spatial smoothing 2-D-MUSIC algorithm and the 2-D unitary ESPRIT algorithm can be applied to the scenarios using either a single snapshot only or multiple ones.…”

“…Several algorithms have been proposed for solving the 2-D-DOA estimation problem [2]- [7]. Fernandez et al [2] propose a matrix-pencil-based method to estimate the 2-D-DOAs directly from a single snapshot of the antenna received data instead of its covariance matrix for reducing the required computations.…”
