Estimating the Risk of Vertical Transmission of Dengue: A Prospective Study

Abstract: The incidence of dengue worldwide is increasing rapidly. A better understanding of dengue transmission may help improve interventions against this major public health problem. The virus is mostly transmitted by vectors. There are, however, other modes of transmission, notably mother-to-child transmission or vertical transmission. We studied a prospective cohort of 54 women who had dengue while pregnant during the 2012-2013 epidemic in French Guiana to estimate the mother-to-child transmission rate and assess t… Show more

“…They also found transmission did occur in early pregnancies. 65 As for the general population, treatment of dengue is supportive; pregnant patients should have close monitoring should the need for emergency C-section arise. Global strategies to reduce transmission besides vaccination are similar to targeted prevention of other vector-borne diseases like malaria.…”

“…Analysis of the serological and the molecular results suggested that vertical transmission is much more persistent if the mothers are infected at a later stage of pregnancy. Valid and appropriate tests must be carried out in order to detect vertical transmission of dengue virus [22].…”
