Estimating the potential of beekeeping to alleviate household poverty in rural Uganda

Abstract: Robust evidence underpinning the role of beekeeping in poverty alleviation is currently lacking. This study estimated the production potential for beekeepers in Northern Uganda by quantifying current production assets (equipment and knowledge) and impact on rural income streams range of proposed interventions. Intervention scenarios evaluated the economic benefits to be derived from different hive types combined with year-round provision of a nectar source ( Calliandra calothyrsus ) plan… Show more

“…We analyzed the total cost of producing cabbage by applying iodine fertilizer (total production cost), increasing the total cost and lowering the BCR as compared to those obtained in the aforementioned study. This is particularly important, as it illustrates the economic effect of the intervention (iodine biofortification) on the overall production, as also reported in the studies by Amulen et al [19] and Vidogbéna et al [29].…”

“…When used in the agri-food sector [18], costs generally refer to the total costs incurred during the production period (e.g., field preparation, transport, agro-chemical, harvest, etc. ), whereas benefits reflect the revenue received by selling the produce [16,19,20]. CBA has also been applied to analyze the economic feasibility of GM crop cultivation [15] and to support the release of GM forest crops (Kazana, et al) [21].…”

“…The pooled estimate among schoolgirls in Uganda, a more homogenous subgroup, was 13% (95% CI 7-21%, 5 studies, I 2 96.4%, S1 File). Higher use was present in areas where there was a history of a programme that had offered reusable pads, such as in refugee camps [42,53] or in schools [8]. Fifteen longitudinal studies followed participants after distributing RMPs, with a median follow-up time of six months (range 2-18 months) (Table 2).…”

“…It has been insisted that beekeeping area or be reserve is recognized through scientific research to reveal the necessary conditions supporting the production of honey crops (Tanzania National Beekeeping Act 2002). Amulen et al (2019) highlighted that the potential of beekeeping for poverty alleviation is lacking because the value of honey products has not been evaluated thoroughly. Apart from the West Kilimanjaro being planted with exotic trees, there are still natural vegetation (thicket, woodland, and forest) patches with high plant diversity that can support honey beekeeping.…”
