Estimating the impact of social isolation on subjective health in Europe

Abstract: We investigate the relationship between social isolation and subjective health, considering that this relationship is potentially affected by endogeneity due to the presence of self-reported measures. Thus, if an increase in social isolation may impact the perception on health, alternative paths of causality may also be hypothesized. Using data from round 7 of the European Social Survey, we estimate an instrumental variable model in which isolation is explained as being a member of an ethnic minority and havin… Show more

“…Also, this study confirmed the findings from extant literature regarding the impact of various factors on subjective health. It provides external validity for prior research in terms of religion [ 8 , 12 ], social gathering [ 10 , 20 ], economic activity [ 15 , 19 ], food expenditure [ 9 , 16 ], leisure expenditure [ 17 , 18 ], travel [ 54 , 56 ], and art watching [ 11 , 14 ].…”

“…This suggests that interacting with others in social gatherings is essential to improving an individual’s health condition. Indeed, Lei et al [ 10 ] demonstrated that social gathering enhances subjective health; while Sironi and Wolff [ 20 ] showed that isolation undermines an individual’s health condition. The third domain believed to affect subjective health is economic activity.…”

“…In the study by Hunt et al (1981), four groups of elderly people were differentiated according to their perceived health status which also accorded with their objective health status, supporting the view that perceptions of individual health are realistic. According to Sironi & Wolff (2021), social isolation influences the deterioration of perceived health status. Moreover, Sun et al (2016) find that SWB varies strongly with perceived health status and that anxiety/depression is most important for SWB.…”

“…These include quasi-experimental strategies such as the potential outcomes/counterfactual theory of causality [ 22 ], the use of natural experiments, and instrumental variables (IV) approaches, which allow considerable control over omitted variables. A recent study [ 23 ] followed such an empirical strategy using cross-country European Social Survey data on adults and subjective general health as an outcome. They estimated an instrumental variable model and found that changes in social isolation influence subjective general health.…”
