Estimating the Discard Mortality of Atlantic Cod in the Southern Gulf of Maine Commercial Lobster Fishery

Abstract: The Gulf of Maine (GOM) commercial lobster fishery has approximately 3.5 million actively fished traps and captures several nontargeted groundfish species, including Atlantic Cod Gadus morhua, as bycatch, yet there has been limited research on the incidental mortality of groundfish in this fishery. Although the mortality of Atlantic Cod has been estimated in other GOM commercial fisheries, unaccounted discard mortality in the lobster fishery may impair recovery efforts for this stock. To help meet research nee… Show more

“…Individual animals were also measured for TL (cm) and evaluated on an ordinal injury code (1–4) according to the degree of overt physical trauma (Table 1). If a monkfish was assigned an injury score of 4, it was either moribund or dead and considered an observation of AVM (Eddy et al 2016; Sweezey et al 2020). Monkfish were examined by a single researcher throughout the cruises to reduce subjectivity in reflex and injury scoring between individuals.…”

“…The diverse questions that AT can address [4][5][6], in addition to continued technological innovation [7], have yielded results revolutionizing our understanding of the aquatic realm. A few examples include gaining insight into the complex migratory movements of anadromous fishes [8-10], postrelease behaviour and survival of bycatch species [11,12], predator-prey interactions [13,14], and demographic parameters for fisheries management [15][16][17]. Furthermore, the spatial (e.g., meters to 1000s of kilometers) and temporal (e.g., days to years) dimensions that comprise animal tracking create a powerful tool to understand organismal responses and ecosystem consequences of human disturbances such as invasive species, habitat degradation, migration impediments, and climate change [2].…”
