Information on reproductive biology is crucial in formulating policy to manage and conserve mahseer in Atu Suasah and Lawe Melang Rivers, Aceh, Indonesia. This research aimed to analyse and compare of mahseer biology including sex ratio, length and weight relationship, Fulton and relative condition factor and fecundity to estimate the reproductive potential of mahseer in these two rivers. The study was conducted from July to December 2019. Mahseer samples were obtained from fishermen who captured the fish using gillnet with mesh size 1.5-2.0 inch. The specimens collected were placed in a coolbox and transported to the Aquatic Resources Management Department of IPB University in Bogor for further analysis. Regression, chi-square, Mann Whitney test and t-test were applied to analyze reproductive biology parameters. There was no significant between-site difference in the reproductive parameters of mahseer from Atu Suasah and Lawe Melang Rivers. The sex ratio was balanced. The growth pattern was allometric negative and the Fulton condition remained stable over the six month study period. Mahseer in the 610-710 mm length class made the largest contribution to total egg production. Management and conservation of this fish should include the designation of a reservation area to mantain larval production as the source of recruits.

The legal basis of managing grouper and snapper fisheries in Saleh Bay is the Governor Regulation of West Nusa Tenggara No. 32 of 2018. This study aims to assess stock performance and understand fishers' perception of the regulation. In this study, we used length-based assessment, perception analysis, and Rapid Appraisal for Fisheries technique. The overall results showed that the implementation of the governor fisheries management regulation was still not optimal, although the potential spawning ratio (SPR) of most fish stocks has higher than the threshold, being over 20% (SPR limit reference point), except Epinephelus coioides. However, fishers had diverse perceptions of the governor regulations and had not fully complied with the most important ones. These included the minimum size of catch and the allowed type of fishing gear. Therefore, we identify four management strategies to improve a more sustainable fisheries management are: an intensive program to increase public awareness about sustainable fisheries needs to be conducted, the policy to limit the legal size must be enforced and should be adopted as provincial regulation in the future, the surveillance capability and law enforcement of destructive fishing practices (bombs and potassium) should be strengthened, stakeholder participation should be engaged, and social institutions of the fishing community should be empowered by co-management. This study also highlights the urgency of establishing a combination of market-based management (e.g., seafood certification) and a closed fishing season in spawning aggregation areas to complement existing fishery management.

Tujuan penelitian adalah mengidentifikasi keramahan alat tangkap jaring insang terhadap aktifitas penangkapan ikan payangka di Danau Bolano Sau melalui kajian sex ratio dan ukuran pertama kali matang gonad. Penelitian dilakukan di perairan Danau Bolano Sau pada bulan Agustus sampai Desember 2019. Sampel ikan payangka diperoleh dari hasil tangkapan nelayan yang menggunakan jaring insang dengan mesh size 3½ inchi. Analisis sampel dilakukan di Laboratorium Kualitas Air, Sekolah Tinggi Perikanan dan Kelautan, Palu. Perbedaan sex ratio ikan payangka menggunakan uji Chi-square sedangkan ukuran pertama kali matang gonad diduga berdasarkan metode Spearman–Karber. Ikan payangka yang tertangkap dengan jaring insang di Danau Bolano Sau berukuran 79-163 mm. Sex ratio antara jantan dan betina tidak seimbang dimana jantan lebih dominan daripada betina. Ukuran pertama kali matang gonad sebesar 119, 19 mm. Sehingga disarankan ukuran layak tangkap ikan payangka > 120 mm. Penggunaan jaring insang dalam aktifitas penangkapan ikan payangka berpengaruh terhadap keseimbangan populasi jantan dan betina namun sangat selektif terhadap ukuran.
