Estimating Pavement Roughness by Fusing Color and Depth Data Obtained from an Inexpensive RGB-D Sensor

Abstract: Measuring pavement roughness and detecting pavement surface defects are two of the most important tasks in pavement management. While existing pavement roughness measurement approaches are expensive, the primary aim of this paper is to use a cost-effective and sufficiently accurate RGB-D sensor to estimate the pavement roughness in the outdoor environment. An algorithm is proposed to process the RGB-D data and autonomously quantify the road roughness. To this end, the RGB-D sensor is calibrated and primary dat… Show more

“…Sensitivity analysis results are shown in Figure 5. Table 12 shows the level of service according to the current sidewalk pavement condition in Korea [12], and it is deemed that the repair is required from 'D' grade. 'D' rating means a pavement condition that affects the normal traffic of pedestrians and where the transportation is weak.…”

“…The sidewalk pavement condition is such that consideration for repair is required depending on the aging of the pavement section D (Poor) Pavement condition to affect traffic 50% or above E (Very Poor) State of pavement inaccessible for normal traffic 75% or above Table 12 shows the level of service according to the current sidewalk pavement condition in Korea [12], and it is deemed that the repair is required from 'D' grade. “…In addition to traffic sensing, there are many aspects and data in community sensing that could be explored in the near future. For example, perception of AVs can be used for monitoring urban forest health, air quality, street surface roughness and many other applications of municipal asset management [ 30 , 31 , 32 , 33 ].…”

“…Although these polymer-based modifiers are added in small amounts, they can double the price of modified asphalt binder [22,23]. To make the polymer modification method more economically viable, it is possible to use waste polymers [24,25], or carbon-based by-products such as carbon black (CB) that is obtained from the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products [26]. CB not only is a good candidate for improving the rutting resistance, but also it imparts anti-aging properties to asphalt binder [27][28][29] and improves the physical and rheological behavior of asphalt binder [30,31].…”
