As emissões de carbono atreladas ao uso e cobertura do solo, vem chamando atenção na comunidade científico. O objetivo desse trabalho foi estimar o sequestro de carbono em diferentes usos e coberturas do solo em áreas do Bioma Cerrado, no Norte de Minas Gerais, em específico na Área de Proteção Ambiental do Rio Pandeiros (APA-RP). Foram utilizadas técnicas de sensoriamento remoto orbital, sobretudo a combinação dos modelos de estimativa da Radiação Fotossinteticamente Ativa Absorvida, Eficiência de Uso da Luz e Fração Evaporativa. Para as áreas de Cerradão, Eucalipto, FED, Pastagens e Veredas no verão, foram estimados valores de 15,61, 21,03, 18,37, 15,28 e 19,99 g C/m-²/d-¹, e no inverno, 10,52, 15,97, 3,23, 2,05 e 7,50 g C/m-²/d-¹.

Background: The study of CO2 fluxes and energy between the surface and the atmosphere, contribute to investigate natural or anthropic effects on ecosystems. Meteorological and micrometeorological stations are usually equipped with instruments capable of measuring these flows directly or indirectly, using Eddy Covariance (EC) and Modified Bowen Ratio (MBR) methods, respectively. The coefficients of turbulent diffusivity are physical quantities directly correlated to magnitudes of flows, and difficult to measure. Objective: The objective of this work was to evaluate the use of turbulent diffusivity coefficients in CO2 flux estimates for the (MBR) method. Methods: The experiment was conducted in Amazonia / Cerrado transition forest, where a meteorological tower was installed. The fluxes of CO2, latent and sensitive heat obtained by the EC and MBR methods were compared by the Scheirer-Ray-Hare statistical test to detect possible differences between flows, seasons, and methods. The CO2 flux, estimated by the Modified Bowen Ratio method, was tested as a function of turbulent diffusion coefficients of sensible and latent heat. Results: In both Bowen ratio and Eddy Covariance methods, available net energy prioritized the latent heat flux during the dry season. The energy balance by Eddy Covariance method was underestimated in 30% in the humid season and 5% in the dry season. The energy balance by the Bowen ratio method closed at 100% during the dry season, but during the wet season it was underestimated at 4%. Conclusion: The CO2 fluxes measured by the Eddy Covariance method and estimated by the Modified Bowen Ratio method as a function of the latent heat turbulent diffusion coefficient, did not show significant differences between their estimates, between the seasons and between the methods. The sensible heat flux showed significant difference between the methods of Bowen ratio and Eddy Covariance, and between the seasons.

Understanding the changes in gross primary production (GPP), which is the total carbon fixation by terrestrial ecosystems through vegetation photosynthesis, due to land use conversion in a tourism city is important for carbon cycle studies. Satellite data from Landsat 5, Landsat 7 and Landsat 8 and meteorological data are used to calculate annual GPP for 1995, 2003 and 2014, respectively, using the vegetation production model (VPM) in the tourism city Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia. Five land use types generated from topographic maps in three different years over the past two decades are used to quantify the impacts of land use changes on GPP estimation values. Analysis was performed for two periods to determine changes in land use and GPP value as well as their speed. The results demonstrated that urban land development, namely, the increase of settlement areas due to tourism activity, had overall negative effects on terrestrial GPP. The total GPP of the whole area decreased by 7793.96 tC year −1 (12.65%) during the study period. The decline is due to the conversion of agriculture and grassland area into settlements, which caused the city to lose half of its ability to uptake carbon through vegetation. However, although forest area is declining, forest maintenance and restoration by making them protection areas has been helpful in preventing a drastic decline in GPP value over the past two decades. This study provides information that is useful for carbon resource management, tourism, policy making and scholars concerned about carbon reduction in a tourism city.
