Estimating Infiltration in Open‐ended Furrow Irrigation by Modifying Final Infiltration Rate

Abstract: The Kostiakov–Lewis equation is one of the commonly used infiltration equations in furrow irrigation. Elliott and Walker developed a two‐point method to estimate coefficients of the Kostiakov–Lewis equation. The basic infiltration rate (fo) in the Kostiakov–Lewis equation is usually calculated by the inflow–outflow method to determine the other two Kostiakov–Lewis parameters. In that method the entire furrow is used as an infiltrometer, which can cause overestimation of fo. In this study, by considering a corr… Show more

“…The average error of the two-point method and IPARM in furrow irrigation was reported by Ebrahimian (2014) as 5.9% and 2.2%, respectively. The amount of error in estimating soil infiltration obtained by the proposed method is much lower than the reported values by other researchers (Ebrahimian et al, 2020, Ebrahimian, 2014, Panahi et al, 2021, Panahi et al, 2022and Ramezani Etedali et al, 2011. In general, Merriam-Keller's method was more accurate in estimating infiltration than the twopoint and IPARM methods.…”

“…They reported that the Elliott-Walker two-point and multilevel optimization method had better performance than the other studied methods. Panahi et al (2022) modified the Elliott-Walker method by applying the correction coefficient for the final infiltration rate (f 0 ) in furrow irrigation. The final infiltration rate obtained from this method was lower than that obtained from the two-point method.…”

“…Seyedzadeh, Panahi, et al (2022) and Kiefer (1965) presented relationships based on the values of r and a in the form of Equations ( 15) and ( 16), respectively, to determine the value of the subsurface water storage shape factor:…”

“…The more accurately the water advance relationship is determined, the more accurately will the V ss be estimated, and as a result, the infiltration coefficients will be determined more accurately. Based on the literature review in the two-and one-point methods (Panahi et al, 2021(Panahi et al, , 2022Seyedzadeh, Panahi, Maroufpoor, Singh, et al, 2020), due to the use of the water advance information of two and one points of the field, respectively, and as a result of not considering the changes in soil infiltration along the field, the relationship of water advance in these methods will not be determined with proper accuracy. Additionally, in these methods, only one water advance relationship is used to determine V L/2 and V L .…”
