Estimating direct medical costs of type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Philippines: a protocol

Abstract: IntroductionDiabetes and its complications are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the Philippines. The prevalence of diabetes in the Philippines has increased from 3.4 million in 2010 to 3.7 million in 2017. The government has formulated strategies to control this increase, for example, through its non-communicable disease prevention and control plan. “…The study methodology has been published. 15 Briefly, the estimation of direct medical cost of T2DM involved two parts: (1) a retrospective cohort study design using electronic records from two hospitals and (2) a crosssectional survey with 50 physicians. The first part was used to estimate the direct medical costs of people with T2DM-related complications, and the latter was aimed to describe the management cost for those without complications and were routinely followed up at outpatient care.…”

“…2 The direct diabetes-related expenditure per person is estimated at around USD 428, and indirect expenditure at USD1,136 per person in the Philippines, indicating a growing financial burden. 3 Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a frequent microvascular complication of diabetes, resulting in high morbidity and mortality. Oxidative stress caused by AGE (advanced glycation end-products) is responsible for microscopic vascular damage hindering blood supply to the peripheral nerves.…”
