Estimating Design Resistance of Wrought Balcony Girders

Abstract: The contribution is focused on reliability of balcony girders of a Czech national heritage monument. As preliminary reliability assessment suggests insufficient resistance, a series of nondestructive tests supplemented by a single tensile test are performed and evaluated by the statistical methods. Values of material properties, recommended in standards for historic materials, seem to be overly conservative and it is advised to specify properties of historic metallic materials by tests.

“…In case that the requirements of currently valid standards for structural design had to be fulfilled, it would be necessary to make strengthening or replacement of the weakened parts and joints of the structural load bearing system. However, the valuable original structural system of the monumental main arch of the stadium need to be preserved which illustrates the architectural feeling and masterwork of the last century in the Czech Republic [7,8,9,10].…”
