Estimating confidence intervals for technical efficiency of rainfed rice farming system in Nigeria

Abstract: Purpose -The purpose of this paper is to analyze the technical efficiency (TE) of the rainfed rice farming system in Nigeria. Design/methodology/approach -Special attention is directed to the construction of confidence interval (CI) for individual efficiency estimates using stochastic frontier production model. Findings -The results show that the coefficient of the regression monotonically and significantly increased output level, while returns-to-scale (RTS) of 0.943 suggest decreasing RTS in the study. “…Age of farmers could reduce inefficiencies of farmers in rice farming. This was consistent with the research of (Islam et al, 2012;Balde et al, 2014;Ogundari et al, 2010;Piya et al, 2012). Age of farmers correlate with farming experience if farming was done continuously.…”

“…Education of farmers could reduce inefficiencies of farmers in rice farming. This was supported by research of (Ogisi et al, 2012;Ogundari et al, 2010;Donkoh et al, 2013;Piya et al, 2012;Mailena et al, 2014a;2014b). The level of person education could affect the decision making process, which was related to the maturity of thinking that owned to manage farming activities that more effective and efficient as well as easier in receiving information and new technology.…”

“…The result is consistent with findings by Ogundari et al . () who found that extension services increase TE in rice production. Ogundari et al (), based on Nigerian literature, argued that increased extension‐technology management has the potential to drive efficiency and can be a stimulus for agricultural growth.…”

“…βk is the parameter vector associated with the x variables for the stochastic frontier for the k th group involved. In specifying the SFA model, Ogundari et al () indicated that it is necessary to choose an appropriate functional form since the functional form can influence the estimated efficiency results. A number of functional forms were explored but the Cobb‐Douglas function was found to be the best fit for the data.…”

“…The choice of functional form is very important when specifying the model, as it can influence the results of the estimated efficiency (Ogundari et al 2010). Functional forms, like linear models, semi-log models, trans-log and the Cobb-Douglas have been used in other studies (e.g., Aung 2011; Ogundari 2008).…”
