Estimates of Within-Subject Biological Variation of Protein C, Antithrombin, Protein S Free, Protein S Activity, and Activated Protein C Resistance in Pregnant Women

Abstract: Transformation of coagulation parameters in healthy pregnancies to lnMoM is a tool to establish a kind of steady state. Although there is a physiological change in PC, AT, and PS free and PS activity during pregnancy, the CV was comparable with the CV of nonpregnant women.

“…Other characteristics of the participating women and their health status during pregnancy can be found in earlier papers. 1921 Study participants were recruited by an advertisement in the local newspaper and on the webpage of Haukeland University Hospital. The Regional Committee of Medical Ethics of Western Norway approved the study (Project number 3.2006.1869/REK Vest 2010/221), and the women gave informed consent to participate.…”

“…24,25 Confidence intervals (95%) were calculated according to Burdick and Graybill. 26 Testing for variance homogeneity was performed as described in detail in earlier publications 1921 and was performed by Bartlett’s test (statistical significance, P < 0.01). 27 Variance homogeneity was illustrated on a rankit scale where the cumulated ranked coefficients of variation were plotted as fractions on the ordinate as function of the personal values of the variation, SD P or CV P .…”

“…PC, PS, and ATIII are three vitamin K-dependent anticoagulant proteins that are key roles in the coagulation regulation [27] . A previous study showed that PS was signi cantly decreased during pregnancy, ATIII was slightly decreased, but the PC expression was largely variated [28] . In the current study, signi cantly differences were identi ed in the expression of serum PC and PS, but not ATIII, between BC and HC women.…”

“…In this study, the levels of free protein S were mea-sured as a percentile, and it is stated that 50~150% is normal range as a reference (Kristoffersen et al 2017). Twenty-one patients had low levels of plasma free protein S (< 50%) which means deficient level ( Table 2).…”
