Estimates of the Number of Workers Exposed to Diesel Engine Exhaust in South Korea from 1993 to 2013

Abstract: BackgroundThe aim of this study was to estimate the number of workers exposed to diesel engine exhaust (DEE) by industry and year in the Republic of Korea.MethodThe estimates of workers potentially exposed to DEE in the Republic of Korea were calculated by industry on the basis of the carcinogen exposure (CAREX) surveillance system. The data on the labor force employed in DEE exposure industries were obtained from the Census on Establishments conducted by the Korea National Statistical Office from 1993 to 2013… Show more

“…Those most commonly exposed worked in the agricultural, mining, transport, and construction industries, and exposures were more common among men and those living in remote areas. This estimate was higher than estimates of exposure prevalence from other countries which have generally ranged from 2%-5% of workers (10)(11)(12)(13). This is likely to reflect the mix of industry sectors in each country.…”

“…The main carcinogens include asbestos, RCS, radon, PAHs, DEE, chromium, and nickel. In addition, according to Choi et al [27], the total number of Korean workers exposed to DEE was estimated to be 417,034 in 2013 (2.2% of the total labor force).…”

“…However, in the current study, exposure from air pollution was not considered in the estimation process. Estimates of the number of workers exposed to diesel engine exhaust in Korea is reported elsewhere ( Choi et al , 2016 ).…”

“…South Korea is a highly industrialized country with a variety of manufacturing sectors and facilities, such as semiconductor and car manufacturing industries. Many workers in these industries are exposed to various carcinogenic agents, and thus, nationwide exposure studies have been conducted for several carcinogens, including benzene, asbestos and diesel engine exhaust ( Park et al , 2015 ; Choi et al , 2016 ; Choi et al , 2017 ; Jung, Koh, et al , 2019 ; Koh et al , 2020 ). However, no integrative carcinogen exposure database has been developed yet.…”
