“…2,3-Dihydroxy-4-oxopentanoic acid (DHOPA) has been found to be a marker compound for toluene SOA. 16 Its concentrations ranged from 0.06−1.9 ng m −3 (0.62 ± 0.55 ng m −3 ) in winter, which were 1 order of magnitude higher than those (0.008−0.21 ng m −3 , 0.05 ± 0.055 ng m −3 ) in summer.…”

“…Eight organic acids were identified as α/β-pinene oxidation products in the Mumbai aerosols, that is, 3-hydroxyglutaric acid, pinonic acid, pinic acid, 3-(2-hydroxyethyl)-2, 2-dimethylcyclobutane carboxylic acid, 3-acetylglutaric acid, 3-acetyladipic acid, 3-isopropylglutaric acid, and 3-methyl-1, 2, 3-butanetricarboxylic acid (MBTCA). 4,6,16 Their total concentrations ranged from 11−72 ng m −3 (29 ± 22 ng m −3 ) in winter, which were 2−3 times higher than those (5.1−21 ng m −3 , 9.4 ± 4.7 ng m −3 ) in summer.…”

“…This is supported by observations of higher concentrations of IEPOX-derived SOA tracers relative to MAEderived SOA tracers at ground sites in summer. 62,70 However, the strong temperature dependence of the fate of the MPAN reservoir (F MAE formation ) coupled with the known altitudinal dependence of temperature and observations and models showing elevated OH and NO 2 above the boundary layer 71−74 suggests that SOA formation from MAE could be enhanced aloft. Advection of MACR out of the boundary layer and into a cooler temperature regime with available OH and NO 2 would generate MPAN in under conditions that favor MAE formation and SOA from the NO/NO 2 pathway leading to a vertically varying isoprene SOA source.…”
