Estimates of genetic parameters and prediction of additive genetic values in Pinus kesya progenies

Abstract: The objeetive ofthis study was to seleet Pinus kesya prog enies by lhe estimation of g enetic p arameters using lhe method of restricted maximum likelihood (Remi) and prediction of additive genetic values by the best linear unbiased prediction (Blup ). The Pinus kesya progeny tesl was installed in randomized b/oeks. which consist ed of 30 progenies and three replications. Tlze twenty-year-old trees were evaluated for lhe traits diameter at breast heiglit (DBH), height (HT) and st em form (FOR). The DBH, HT and… Show more

“…A utilização da metodologia SELEGEN-REML/BLUP, desenvolvida para o melhoramento de plantas perenes tem maximizado os ganhos genéticos com seleção (Resende 2002;Costa et al 2005;Missio et al 2005), por tratar-se de um procedimento estimativo, especialmente para dados desbalanceados, predizendo valores genéticos dos indivíduos em testes de progênies (Resende 2002).…”

“…It is naturally distributed in the Himalayan region of Asia, which includes: Burma, China, India, Laos, Philippines, Thailand, Tibet, and Vietnam. The species has a large ecological adaptability and growing performance and can be found in a variety of different locations from 300 to 2700 m above the sea level [2]. The most efficient way to meet the increasing global wood demand is to establish plantations with genetically improved seeds.…”

“…The relative fast growth and wide geographical distribution of the species led to the establishment of a breeding programme in Malawi in the 1970s with seed sources from South Africa and Zimbabwe [3]. The timber of this species is easily sawn and suitable for paneling, cabinet work, joinery, poles and general construction [2,4].…”
