Estimated Projection of US Cancer Incidence and Death to 2040

Abstract: IMPORTANCECoping with the current and future burden of cancer requires an in-depth understanding of trends in cancer incidences and deaths. Estimated projections of cancer incidences and deaths will be important to guide future research funding allocations, health care planning, and health policy efforts.OBJECTIVE To estimate cancer incidences and deaths in the United States to the year 2040.DESIGN AND SETTING This cross-sectional study's estimated projection analysis used population growth projections and cur… Show more

“…This increase is mainly driven by external factors, such as an influx of immigration from countries with a high CHB prevalence. The increase in CHB has been paralleled by an increase in HCC, which is now the fastest growing cancer in the United States in terms of incidence [ 1 ]. Furthermore, the proportion of HCC cases resulting from CHB has also increased, with one American study demonstrating that the proportion of CHB-induced HCC cases grew from 4% to 21% [ 16 ].…”

“…Liver cancer is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality on a global scale, with approximately 30,000 deaths expected annually in the United States in 2020 [ 1 ], and significantly increased incidence rates modelled by 2030 world-wide [ 2 ]. The most common form of liver cancer is hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), which accounts for approximately 75–85% of liver cancer cases [ 3 ].…”

“…With an average five-year survival of less than 10%, pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) is an extremely lethal malignancy [1]. The disease rate is increasing; it is estimated that PDA will rise from the third to the second leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S. by 2025 [2]. Systemic therapies are often ineffective with high rates of intrinsic and acquired resistance to conventional treatment regimens.…”

“…Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has one of the worst prognoses among solid cancers with a 5-year survival of less than 9% [ 1 ], with these numbers predicated to worsen [ 2 ]. The high mortality is mainly attributed to the particularly aggressive biology of PDAC, coupled with the late presentation and diagnosis at advanced stages when curative surgery is not feasible [ 3 ].…”
