Estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate and 6-Minute Walk Distance in African Americans with Mild to Moderate Heart Failure

Abstract: Background/Aims: The 6-minute walk test is a measure of functional capacity in patients with heart failure (HF) or chronic kidney disease (CKD). The association between estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) has not been investigated in African-Americans (AA), despite them having a higher incidence of CKD and chronic HF. Thus, our aim was to determine if eGFR was an independent predictor of 6MWD in AA >50 years of age with HF. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, we ex… Show more

“…18 Renal insufficiency has been suggested as a limiting factor to exercise capacity in patients with HF 56 and a reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate may be used as an early marker to identify declining functional capacity in these patients. 57 Furthermore, in patients with chronic HF, N-terminal prohormone of brain natriuretic peptide, a biomarker of HF severity, was found to be a significant predictor of 6MWD, but this relationship was substantially less strong than that seen for peak VO 2 . 58…”

“…Renal function is one of the most potent predictors of prognosis in patients with heart failure [1][2][3][4]. Estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) is the most widely used parameter for assessing renal function in clinical practice.…”
