Estimated Direct Medical Cost of Osteoporosis in Saudi Arabia: A Single-Center Retrospective Cost Analysis

Abstract: Osteoporosis and its complications are a major health concern in Saudi Arabia, and the prevalence of osteoporosis is on the rise. The aim of this study was to estimate the direct healthcare cost for patients with osteoporosis. A retrospective study was carried out among adult patients with osteoporosis in a teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia. “…Among direct medical costs, the highest amounts comprise costs due to admission to hospital, while among direct non-medical costs, highest amounts are for caregivers and medical materials related to the fracture [50]. A study in Saudi Arabia by Balkhi et al (2021), the annual mean cost per person for patients without hip fractures was $975.77, while it reached $9716.26 for patients with osteoporotic fractures [51]. A study in Ontario by Alolabi et al (2009) calculated the annual mean cost from the payer perspective was $18,100 for internal fixation and $15,843 for hemiarthroplasty [18].…”

“…The gold standard in diagnosing osteoporosis is dual-energy X-ray absorption (DXA). However, availability is limited in many hospitals; only 15%-25% of those patients who suffer a fragility fracture are scanned and treated [7]. Other than the availability, the operating cost of a DXA and the need for a specialized technician limit its usage in hospitals [8].…”

“…From a financial standpoint, a recent study in Saudi Arabia estimated the mean direct medical cost for osteoporosis of patients without fractures as 975.77 USD per person per year (PPPY) and for patients with fractures as 9,716.26 USD PPPY, which might be an underestimate as the data reflects governmental hospital pricing [ 14 ]. One study developed a model that estimated osteoporotic fractures amounting to 988,029 within a five-year period from 2019 to 2023.…”
