Estimate of DMFT index using teeth most affected by dental caries in twelve-year-old children

Abstract: The objective of the study was to develop regression models to describe the epidemiological profi le of dental caries in 12-year-old children in an area of low prevalence of caries. Two distinct random probabilistic samples of schoolchildren (n=1,763) attending public and private schools in Piracicaba, Southeastern Brazil, were studied. Regression models were estimated as a function of the most affected teeth using data collected in 2005 and were validated using a 2001 database. The mean (SD) DMFT index was 1.… Show more

“…DMFT in the subjects was assessed by a single examiner, and the intra-examiner reliability for caries status (Kappa statistic) was 0.94. The clinical dental examination was conducted in the schools on a comfortable chair with the aid of a headlamp, a mouth mirror and a WHO probe (18).…”

“…At DMFT 2.2, the sites affected were 2.2 pits and fissures, 0.5 proximal, 0.07 smooth surfaces in molars and 0.10 in anterior teeth, respectively; only 2.9 of the 92 caries predilection sites were affected at DMFT of 2.2. The idea that the mouth could be zoned, so enabling a more efficient data collection method, was also suggested by Viegas [1969], Grainger [1967] [Pereira et al, 2009]. Broadbent et al [2006] examined the caries patterns and tooth loss in the Dunedin cohort for adults between the ages of 26 and 32 years with a DMFS of 13.9 at the age of 26 and 17.7 at the age of 32.…”

“…The slower progression of lesions 22 , the unequal distribution of disease 2 , with about 80% of caries experience is concentrated in 20-30% of the population 10,25,31 , and the concentration of new lesions on occlusal surfaces of permanent molars 8,12,26 have also been noted.…”
