Whole rice bran (WRB) was added to Japanese quail feed, and the effects of stabilization of the WRB with organic acids and its storage for different amounts of time were evaluated with respect to performance and egg quality, centesimal composition, and sensory characteristics. We used 150 90-d-old Japanese quails. We had a 5 × 2 factorial scheme of five storage periods (0, 30, 60, 90, and 120 d), with and without organic acid treatment. To replace corn, 20% WRB was added to the diet. Feed consumption increased for up to 71 d of bran storage (P = 0.01) and then subsequently decreased. An increasing quadratic relationship was observed between egg mass and storage time for up to 71 d of storage (P = 0.03); egg mass then decreased thereafter. The specific gravity of the eggs produced by birds that received treated WRB at 0 d of storage was greater than those of eggs produced by birds that received treated WRB after 90 d of storage. In conclusion, the organic acid treatment maintained the quality of the WRB over up to 120 d of storage and could comprise 20% of the laying quails' diet without affecting growth performance, egg quality, bromatological composition, or the sensory attributes of the eggs.Key words: egg quality, quails, whole rice bran, storage, sensory attributes.Résumé : Le son de riz entier (WRB) a été ajouté à l'alimentation des cailles du Japon et les effets de la stabilisation du WRB avec des acides organiques et son entreposage pendant des périodes de temps différentes ont été évalués par rapport à la performance et la qualité des oeufs, la composition centésimale et les caractéristiques sensorielles. Nous avons utilisé 150 cailles du Japon âgées de 90 jours. Un schéma factoriel 5 × 2 de cinq périodes d'entreposage (0, 30, 60, 90 et 120 jours), avec et sans traitement à l'acide organique. Pour remplacer le maïs, 20 % de son de riz entier a été ajouté à la diète. La consommation d'aliments a augmenté pendant 71 jours d'entreposage du son (P = 0,01), puis a diminué. Une relation quadratique croissante a été observée entre la masse de l'oeuf et le temps d'entreposage pendant jusqu'à 71 jours d'entreposage (P = 0,03); la masse de l'oeuf a diminué par après. La densité des oeufs produits par les oiseaux ayant reçu le son de riz entier traité à 0 jour d'entreposage était plus élevée que celle des oeufs produits par des oiseaux ayant reçu le son de riz entier traité après 90 jours d'entreposage. En conclusion, le traitement à l'acide organique a maintenu la qualité du son de riz entier pendant jusqu'à 120 jours d'entreposage, qui peut être utilisé à raison de 20 % de la diète des cailles pondeuses sans effet néfaste sur la performance de croissance, la qualité des oeufs, la composition bromatologique ou les caractéristiques sensorielles des oeufs. Resumo -O objetivo deste trabalho foi verificar a possibilidade de uso de dados parciais na seleção de codornas de corte para produção de ovos. Foram avaliados os grupos genéticos de codornas de corte UFV1 e UFV2, de origens distintas. Using partial data in the selection of meat-type quail for egg productionAbstract -The objective of this work was to verify the possibility of using partial data in the selection of meat-type quail for egg production. The genetic groups UFV1 and UFV2 of meat-type quails, which are from different origins were evaluated. Information from 1,632 mothers, of which 816 from UFV1 and 816 from UFV2 genetic group, was used. The genetic parameters were obtained at the partial periods from the 6 th to 24 th (P 24 ), 32 th (P 32 ), 40 th (P 40 ) and 48 th (P 48 ) weeks, and at the total period of egg production (P 52 ), from the 6 th to 52 th week. The components of variance and covariance and the genetic parameters were estimated by restricted maximum likelihood, using a univariate animal model. The partial and total production of eggs were estimated by the multivariate animal model through the Wombat application. For UFV1, the heritability values were: 0.09, P 24 ; 0.09, P 32 ; 0.09, P 40 ; 0.08, P 48 ; and 0.07 for P 52 ; and the genetic correlations ranged from 0.79 to 0.99. For UFV2, the heritability values were: 0.09 for P 24 ; 0.09, P 32 ; 0.10, P 40 ; 0.11, P 48 ; and 0.13 for P 52 ; and correlations ranged from 0.70 to 0.99. For UFV1 selection, it is recommended to consider egg production up to 40 weeks, and for UFV2 selection, egg production until the 48 th week. The low heritability estimates suggest that management changes should be done in order to control environmental effects.

The aim of this study was to assess the goodness of fit for nonlinear models, using the best model to describe body growth curves, comparing the parameters obtained for gender and one meat-type (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) and two laying (Coturnix coturnix japonica) quail strains, as well as nesting via MCMC (Markov chain Monte Carlo processes) methods under a Bayesian approach. A total of 1,350 one-day-old mixed quail were used: 400 of meat-type, 450 of yellow laying, and 500 of red laying strains distributed in a completely randomized design with three treatments (each treatment corresponded to one strain) and five replications. The experimental period consisted of 1 to 42 days of age. At 21 days of age, quail sexing was performed by means of sexual dimorphism, being individually identified at one day of age with numbered rings, allowing determining growth curves by gender. Birds were reared in a conventional system, fed ad libitum with diets formulated to meet nutritional requirements. Body weight was determined weekly and assessed using nonlinear models: Logistic, Brody, Von Bertalanffy, and Gompertz. DIC (Deviance Information Criterion) criterion was used to select the best nonlinear model, i.e. the lower the DIC value is, the better the model goodness of fit to the data. Gompertz model was better adjusted to the data regardless the gender or strain. Meat-type quail had the highest asymptotic weights and the highest age at which growth rate was maximum, followed by red and yellow strains. All nestings presented significant differences (p < 0.05) between gender for contrasted parameters. Meat-type, yellow, and red females presented values significantly (p < 0.05) higher for asymptotic weight (370, 203, and 215 g, respectively) when compared to males (274, 131, and 143 g, respectively), which were earlier in body growth. ResumoO objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a qualidade de ajuste dos modelos não lineares aos dados, utilizando o melhor modelo para descrever as curvas de crescimento corporal, comparando os parâmetros obtidos para gênero e uma linhagem de codornas de corte (Coturnix coturnix coturnix) e duas de postura (Coturnix coturnix japonica), bem como o aninhamento, via método MCMC (Cadeias de Markov em processos de Monte Carlo), sob o enfoque Bayesiano. Foram utilizadas 1.350 codornas mistas, com um dia de idade, sendo: 400 da linhagem de corte, 450 de postura amarela e 500 de postura vermelha, distribuídas por um delineamento inteiramente casualizado, com três tratamentos (cada tratamento corresponde a uma linhagem) e cinco repetições. O período experimental foi de 1 a 42 dias de idade. Aos 21 dias de idade foi realizada a sexagem por dimorfismo sexual, sendo que elas foram identificadas individualmente com um dia com anilhas numeradas, possibilitando a determinação das curvas de crescimento por gênero.
