Esthetic and functional rehabilitation of bilateral congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors: Minimally invasive surgical and prosthetic approach

Abstract: Objective Congenital absence of maxillary lateral incisors is a frequent clinical challenge which must be solved by a multidisciplinary approach in order to obtain an esthetic and functional restorative treatment. Noninvasive treatments, that are in accordance with the patients' expectations, should be the first therapeutic alternative. If the deciduous tooth is present, minimally invasive dental extraction followed by immediate dental implant placement and provisional restoration is indicated. In this restora… Show more

“…In subjects with hypodontia the treatment is complex and for successful and satisfied results requires an interdisciplinary approach including the collaboration between specialist, mainly with an orthodontist, a prosthodontist, an oral surgeon, and occasionally also with periodontist. As in previously described peg-shaped PMLI, the treatment plan depends on the age of the patient, the space, the condition of supporting tissues, occlusion and interocclusal space, and there are two treatment approaches possible: the first is closure of the space via orthodontic management [ 27 ] and the second is the replacement of the absent teeth via implants or prosthetics (bridge) [ 28 ]. In the present study, all subjects with hypodontia were treated interdisciplinarily.…”

“…Moreover, to reach the so desired “perfect illusion” 14 among dental implant and adjacent tooth, zirconia‐based implant infrastructure was used in association to feldspathic veneers at the anterior maxillary teeth, after dental bleaching. This multidisciplinary minimally invasive approach has been suggested as an advisable way to reach predictable results in the esthetic region 15 …”

“…Recently, zirconia materials have evolved to provide the same flexural strength of traditional zirconia with various degrees of translucency and colour, allowing clinicians to closely mimic natural teeth and broadening its applications. 11,12 In particular, aesthetic zirconia may be used for patients with bruxism who require full mouth rehabilitation.…”
