Establishment of tree seedlings and water-soluble nutrients in coarse woody debris in an old-growth Picea-Abies forest in Hokkaido, northern Japan

Abstract: Forest floor microsite conditions and tree seedling establishment were studied at an old-growth Picea-Abies forest in Hokkaido Island, northern Japan. Tree seedlings were established abundantly on coarse woody debris (CWD) from decay class III, a class indicating moderate decay, to class V, the most advanced decay class. The height-class distribution of tree seedlings indicates that the recruitment of Picea glehnii (Fr. Schm.) Masters and Picea jezoensis (Sieb. et Zucc.) Carr. seedlings on CWD started on deca… Show more

“…Yet the conditions favourable to germination and initial survival (Pauley 1993) do not necessarily favour mid-or long-term establishment and growth (Takahashi et al 2000, Burgess and Wetzel 2002, Prévost and Dumais 2003. In the present study, relatively high initial density and survival allowed red spruce Table 4.…”

“…The amount of organic matter and soil C stocks are dependent on the vegetation, site conditions and forest management practices (Yin 1999;Debeljak 2006). Deadwood stock is influenced by forest age, and old-growth forests usually contain large quantities of C (Harmon and Hua 1991;Takahashi et al 2000). In protected forest areas and in intensively managed forest ecosystems (old-growth Norway spruce mixed forest), stumps are usually present.…”

“…Fallen logs provide safe sites for tree seedlings because competition with understory herbs is greatly reduced (Harmon & Franklin, 1989) and few pathogenic fungi can infect tree seedlings on fallen logs (O'Hanlon-Manners & Kotanen, 2004). Well-decomposed fallen logs with moss cover show reduced evaporation and contain water-soluble nutrients (Takahashi et al, 2000). However, seedling densities differ markedly among fallen logs, and not all fallen logs provide safe sites (Takahashi et al, 2000;Narukawa et al, 2003;Iijima & Shibuya, 2010).…”
