Establishment of CTD Calibration System and Uncertainty Estimation

The long-term mooring performed at a KOGA station, located at about 30 o 20'N, 126 o 12'E in the East China Sea shelf, shows some different behaviors between "semi-diurnal" and "diurnal currents" defined as the currents with periods around, respectively, a half day and a day. They appear to be predominantly tidal having significant coherences with sea level changes around the semi-diurnal and diurnal frequencies. The "semi-diurnal current" is strongly barotropic all year round. However, contrastingly, it is largely baroclinic in summer in the area about 70 km nearer to the continental slope, referred to as the "slope-area", as was found in previous current observations. The "diurnal current" of tidal origin is strongly barotropic in winter. In spring and summer, however, it becomes more baroclinic although it still remains largely barotropic, also showing more of its barotropic nature than in the "slope-area". The inertial oscillation contributing to the "diurnal current" appears to be more prominent when the current is baroclinic, indicating the important role played by stratification in generation of inertial oscillations. Downward energy propagation of inertial oscillation is not observed, suggesting that it is not created at the surface by wind. Considering that the study area is both near a critical latitude and proximity to the continental slope, it is suggested that parametric subharmonic instability (PSI) plays a significant role in creating the baroclinic inertial oscillation.

Market Interactions for Farmed Fish Species on the Korean Market

This study aims to analyze the market interactions among the main farmed fish species in Korea, using both multivariate and bivariate cointegration analysis. For the analysis of market interactions among farmed fish species, major four farmed fish species, olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus), black rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli), red seabream (Pagrus major), and grey mullet (Mugil cephalus) were selected as the analytical target species. And their real price data by month from January 2000 to December 2011 were used in the analysis. The results of the multivariate cointegration test for four farmed fish showed that there would be no long-term equilibrium relationships among farmed fish species, and consequently they do not share the same market. The results of bivariate cointegration test indicated that there was little evidence to suggest that all farmed fish species were cointegrated each other. However, it was only analyzed that olive flounder and grey mullet might have a long run equilibrium relationship.

Summary of 2014 JCOMM Pilot Inter-Comparison Project for Seawater Salinity Measurements

The inter-comparison project for seawater salinity measurements, in which 25 laboratories from 16 countries took part, was conducted by JCOMM (Joint WMO/IOC Technical Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology) for the first time in 2014. Two seawater samples of different salinity values ranging from 30−35 and 20−25 for Sample A and Sample B respectively and which had sufficient homogeneity and stability were distributed to all participants. Participants measured the salinity in their own laboratories at least 3 times and reported the results. Statistical treatments were applied to the results to assess discrepancies among laboratories. 20 out of the 25 laboratories used laboratory salinometers and statistics for this group were denoted as belonging to group α; while 5 out of the 25 laboratories used hand-held measuring instruments and statistics for this group were denoted as belonging to group β. Bias described as discrepancy among laboratories in group α was within ± 0.001 and expanded uncertainty (k = 2) was in the vicinity of 0.002. The bias and the uncertainty of Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST), in group α, were 0.000 and 0.002, respectively. The biases of group β were greater than group α because of constraints related to instrument accuracy. Biases from 3 laboratories in group β exceed the accuracy specification of the corresponding instruments. Considering that the uncertainty of Standard Seawater (SSW) is of the order 0.001 to 0.002, the inter-comparison results show that 16 laboratories among the 25 laboratories made high quality measurements, largely indistinguishable from one another.
