Establishment of cell lines derived from skin biopsies of crested ibis (<I>Nipponia nippon</I>) and their biological characteristics

Abstract: The crested ibis is among the rarest and most endangered species worldwide. To preserve its genetic resources and conveniently provide materials for biological research, we successfully established two cell lines from biopsies of a male and female adult crested ibis. The cultured cells from both specimens had typical fibroblast morphology. Immunofluorescence staining revealed that the cultured cells strongly expressed the marker of smooth muscle specific α-actin, clearly indicating the cells were from the smoo… Show more

“…The karyotype of ACI and EGA were arranged according to the relative length of the chromosomes from the largest to the smallest. The chromosomes of NNI were numbered according to previously published karyotypes with a minor revision [ 12 , 15 , 32 ].…”

“…The sex differentiation region (SDR) of the W chromosome is 37.7 Mb in size, being one of the largest assembled bird W chromosomes (Supplementary Data 1). Such a large size for the assembled W chromosome is consistent with the cytogenetically estimated size 51 that falls between the sizes of chromosomes 9 and 10. We annotated 414 protein-coding genes on the sexually differentiated region (SDR) of chromosome W, making it the most gene-rich SDR of bird W chromosomes, suggesting that only 54.6% of the original gene content was lost from the W chromosome, in contrast to the greater that 90% found in most land birds 52 .…”
