“…The telemedicine technology in the ED consists of a mobile computer and camera – a ‘telemedicine cart’ (Polycom http://www.polycom.com.au/products-services/hd-telepresence-video-conferencing/realpresence-room/realpresence-room-practioner-cart-noram.html). A protocol for stroke thrombolysis was developed based on national guidelines in addition to a VST protocol for teleconsultation . During the acute phase of the patient presentation, the medical staff in the ED are able to call a fixed 1300 telephone number to contact a roster of metropolitan‐based stroke specialists who work at various Melbourne‐based hospitals and have agreed to be part of a roster for VST to ensure coverage 24 h/7 days a week .…”

“…A big challenge in Australia is the geographic isolation of some regions, and the vast distances . The Victorian Stroke Telemedicine project and the rural Prehospital Acute Stroke Triage trial in New South Wales are examples attempting to address this issue . A study from South Australia demonstrated that patients living closer to stroke units were more likely to receive thrombolysis .…”
