Establishment and Production Costs for Peach Orchards in Florida: Enterprise Budget and Profitability Analysis

Abstract: The article summarizes the establishment and production costs, as well as the potential profitability of a peach orchard in Florida. Our findings show the initial investment required for a peach operation in Florida to be $6,457 per acre; the expense in land preparation and planting alone in year 1 is $2,541 per acre. Variable and fixed costs in years 2 through 15 average $5,680 per acre. As an example of profitability, when using a 10% discount rate, an operation yielding 6,525 (7,254) pounds of marketable fr… Show more

“…Peaches are commercially produced in 20 states of the United States [8]. California is the top peachproducing state, accounting for approximately 70% of the domestic production, followed by South Carolina, Georgia, and New Jersey [9]. The bearing acreage of peach trees in the United States has been gradually declining for the past two decades [8].…”

“…Peaches have become a relevant specialty crop in Florida and a promising alternative that may help the profitability of growers of traditionally cultivated crops such as citrus. This emerging importance is evidenced in the increasing peach acreage in Florida, whereas the cultivated area at the national level has been decreasing during the last decade [8,9,14]. Currently, the industry is valued at more than USD 10 million annually and produces 3.3 million kg of fruit [14].…”

“…Biocrusts have also been recently described in agroecosystems (Peng and Bruns 2019a , Nevins et al 2021 ) and provide comparable rates of N-fixation with natural ecosystem biocrusts with estimates from 8.1 kg N ha −1 year −1 (citrus orchard) to 4.9 kg N ha −1 year −1 (vineyard) (Sorochkina et al 2022 ). The N requirements of perennial crops, such as citrus, that range from 22 to 336 kg N ha −1 year −1 in Florida's sandy soils (Husmann and Dearing 1913 , Singerman et al 2017 , Kadyampakeni and Morgan 2020 , Sorochkina et al 2022 ), underscore the great interest of many producers in capitalizing on the potential of naturally occurring N-fixation as a source of crop N.…”

“…Peach orchards may not generate revenue until 3 yr after orchard establishment (Singerman et al 2021). Given the capital investment, maintenance costs, and delay in revenue generation, it may take 7 or 8 yr of production for a peach orchard to break even or become profitable (Knudsen et al 2016).…”
