Establishment and application of information resource of mutant mice in RIKEN BioResource Research Center

Abstract: Online databases are crucial infrastructures to facilitate the wide effective and efficient use of mouse mutant resources in life sciences. The number and types of mouse resources have been rapidly growing due to the development of genetic modification technology with associated information of genomic sequence and phenotypes. Therefore, data integration technologies to improve the findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability of mouse strain data becomes essential for mouse strain repositories.… Show more

“…In 2019, operation of this database was transferred to the RIKEN BioResource Research Center (BRC) (Masuya et al 2021 ), and the database was renamed “MoG+” ( https://molossinus.brc.riken.jp/mogplus/ ). In this study, we performed a new comparative genomics analysis with dbSNP data (Mouse dbSNP 142; ftp://ftp-mouse.sanger.ac.uk/ ).…”

“…Dissemination of information associated with mouse strains has a vital role in facilitating active use of largescale mouse resources by the biomedical community. We have recently renewed the RIKEN BRC home page and developed a revised version of the searchable online catalog of mouse strains that functions as a part of the BRCintegrated database (Masuya et al 2021).…”

“…Phenotypic data for each strain is an important key to evaluating the strain as a potential human disease model or a tool to study disease mechanisms. The Integrated Bioresource Information Division has recently upgraded the mouse web catalog by manually adding 24,490 phenotype annotations to over 4300 strains from publications so that users can find a specific mouse strain based on phenotype ontology terms in addition to gene names (Masuya et al 2021), thus increasing the findability of the strains. We also promote comprehensive phenotyping of deposited mouse strains by the Japan Mouse Clinic at the RIKEN BRC (Wakana et al 2009).…”

“…RIKEN BRC was established in 2001 and has been designated as the mouse resource core facility (and the backup rat resource facility) for the National BioResource Project, MEXT, Japan. RIKEN BRC has collected, preserved, quality-controlled and distributed valuable mouse resources created mainly in Japan with support of the global research community (Yoshiki et al 2009 ; Masuya et al 2021 ). Four divisions and three teams at RIKEN BRC have collaborated to participate in AMMRA and IMPC, facilitate dissemination of mouse resources, and enrich the value of the strains with broad-based phenotyping data and high-quality genome information (Takada et al 2015 ; Dickinson et al 2016 ; Bowl et al 2017 ; Karp et al 2017 ; Rozman et al 2018 ; Lloyd et al 2020 ; Tanaka and Masuya 2020 ) as well as sharing relevant knowledge and technologies with the global community (Masuya et al 2011 ; Kobayashi et al 2018 ).…”
