Establishment and activity of the D quadrant organizer in the marine gastropod Crepidula fornicata

Abstract: During development in metazoan embryos, the fundamental embryonic axes are established by organizing centers that influence the fates of nearby cells. Among the spiralians, a large and diverse branch of protostome metazoans, studies have shown that an organizer sets up the dorsal-ventral axis, which arises from one of the four basic cell quadrants during development (the dorsal, D quadrant). Studies in a few species have also revealed variation in terms of how and when the D quadrant and the organizer are esta… Show more

“…These results indicate that the specification of shell field tissues seemingly does not rely on a particular organization pattern of the shell field (the rosette-like pattern), and that the formation of a morphologically discriminable shell field and the specification of shell field cells may be decoupled. It is consistent with previous observations that in some circumstances when the formation of shell field is interrupted, the differentiation of shell field tissues is somewhat uninfluenced since birefringent shell materials can be frequently observed [35][36][37][38][39][40][41][42]. The particular organization of the shell field may be only necessary for the correct formation of a shell plate, but not for the specification of particular cell types.…”

“…That set in motion an orchestrated set of events involving the induced expression of conserved transcription factors such as brachyury, goosecoid and foxa [55]. This is reflected by organizers recognized, for instance, in Cnidaria [56,57], and Bilateria including Planarian flat worms [58], arthropods [59], spiralian protostomes [60], and of course the deuterostome/chordate Spemann-Mangold organizer [61,62].…”

“…The D-quadrant is of particular interest for early developmental signaling because the D-quadrant produces the organizer in spiralians (Henry et al, 2017). The organizer is the cell(s) responsible for setting up the D-V axis by signaling to adjacent cells in the early embryo (Lambert and Nagy, 2002).…”

“…The D-quadrant is of particular interest for early developmental signaling because the Dquadrant produces organizer signaling in spiralians (Henry et al, 2017). An organizer is a cell or group of cells with a large effect on development and is responsible for setting up the normal pattern of cell fates (Lambert, 2010;Nakamoto et al, 2011).…”
