Establishing the Association Between Osteoporosis and Peptic Ulcer Disease: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Osteoporosis is one of the most common metabolic bone diseases. Many studies were conducted to find the association between peptic ulcer disease (PUD), Helicobacter pylori infection, proton-pump inhibitor (PPI) use, and increased risk for fracture, but results remain ambiguous. We performed this systematic review to understand the association between PUD and osteoporosis. We comprehensively searched relevant articles on April 19, 2022, by exploring different databases including PubMed, PubMed Central (PMC), an… Show more

“…In particular, virulent strains of H. pylori infection (e.g., CagA-positive (cytotoxin-associated gene A-positive) cause a stronger inflammatory response in the gastric mucosa and throughout the body [ 24 ]. Chronic H. pylori infection can predispose people to bone loss and osteoporosis, as bone cells are sensitive to pro-inflammatory cytokines [ 25 ]. Our study found that H. pylori may affect osteoporosis through serum albumin, HDL, fasting blood glucose and vitamin D, Which may be involved in the link that H. pylori infection stimulates local and systemic inflammatory factors acting on this aspect of bone conversion.…”

“…The age of the patient and the location of the ulcer-gastric or duodenal affect the clinical manifestations of the disease. However, in general, patients who present with burning, postprandial fullness, or early satiety raise the suspicion of PUD [ 1 , 2 ]. Upper gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation, and blockage are among PUD complications.…”
