Establishing high‐quality reference values for nerve conduction studies: A report from the normative data task force of the American Association Of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine

Abstract: Rigorous criteria enable identification of high-quality studies dealing with nerve conduction reference values. This represents the first step toward the overarching goal of recommending NCS techniques and reference values for electrodiagnostic medicine. Muscle Nerve 54: 366-370, 2016.

“…Moreover, in our study we included a large sample of healthy subjects from a wide range of age, so our results should probably be more generalizable. In their article, Dillingham et al recommended that skin temperature should be maintained between 32 and36°C . In our study, cutaneous temperature was slightly lower (31.78 ± 1.86).…”

“…Despite standardization of our measurements, ambient temperature and skin temperature during the NCS remain as confounders. Moreover, in some instances, international standards are controversial, for example, when choosing a method for warming of limbs . NCSs in this study were not performed as detailed as they are necessary for diagnosis of a CIDP or for a primarily electrophysiological question, which is a limitation of our NCS data.…”

“…A new technique was developed to evaluate the medial femoral cutaneous sensory nerve that fulfills all the requirements stated in the guidelines from the NDTF and AANEM . SNAPs were obtained from all 104 subjects, regardless of weight, height, gender, or age.…”

“…The objective of this study was to describe a new technique for the evaluation of the medial femoral cutaneous sensory nerve. We also intended to establish the reference values for a healthy population, taking into account the guidelines required by the Normative Data Task Force (NDTF) of the American Association of Neuromuscular & Electrodiagnostic Medicine (AANEM) …”
