Establishing a case for improved food phenolic analysis

Abstract: Future phenolic research findings using a multidisciplinary approach will ensure profitability and sustainability of specialty crop industries, while also improving the nutritional and economic choices available to increasingly health- and environmentally conscious consumers. Recent examples of phenolics used in commercial and research scenarios, and new phenolic research discoveries are discussed. Despite being a heavily researched topic, there remains a need to identify, develop, and define analyses targeted… Show more

“…Here, we characterize the metabolome 1214 , a global set of small molecules, within adipose tissue depots at thermoneutrality (30 °C) and during a time course (2–6 hours) of acute cold exposure by combining high-resolution magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) and ultra-high pressure liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS) analytical platforms 13, 15–17 . Our analysis of adipose tissue metabolism supports the findings that BAT thermogenesis is associated with glutathione depletion after acute cold exposure.…”

“…While individual phenolics have been used in plant systematics and have become recognized for their utility in quality monitoring of crops and product manufacturing, they are now being investigated for possible human health benefits. A thorough identification of phenolics in foods will aid research in determining food and dietary supplement authenticity, quality assurance standards, and health investigations (Winter and Herrmann, 1986; Stuart and Wills, 2003; Lee, 2010, 2014; Lee and Scagel, 2009, 2010; Sanzini et al, 2011). With our current awareness in eating a healthy diverse diet, and the recent attention chicoric acid has received, we consider this review necessary to summarize the present data on plant sources of chicoric acid and factors that may influence their identification, production, and use.…”

“…Black raspberry ( Rubus occidentalis L.) has fruit, plant phenology, plant morphology, and anthocyanin profile distinctly different from red raspberry, blackberry, or any other genus Rubus berries [ 5 , 7 – 9 ]. Since most people are unable to distinguish black raspberries, a simple fact sheet has been generated ( www.black-raspberry.com ) to help educate researchers, health professionals, industry, and consumers the differences among black raspberry, red raspberry, and blackberry.…”
