EST analysis of gene expression in the tentacle of Cyanea capillata

Abstract: Jelly¢sh, Cyanea capillata, has an important position in head patterning and ion channel evolution, in addition to containing a rich source of toxins. In the present study, 2153 expressed sequence tags (ESTs) from the tentacle cDNA library of C. capillata were analyzed. The initial ESTs consisted of 198 clusters and 818 singletons, which revealed approximately 1016 unique genes in the data set. Among these sequences, we identi¢ed several genes related to head and foot patterning, voltagedependent anion channel… Show more

“…In bilaterians, protease inhibitors restrict their activity according to a tight balance that prevents cellular defects as autodigestion (Witt et al, 2000), abnormal cell migration and metastasis. Related protease inhibitors were identified in cnidarians (Tschesche et al, 1987;Holstein et al, 1992;Yang et al, 2003). Amongst those, the sea anemone elastase inhibitor and the hydra antistatin act as serine protease inhibitors, the former one encoding a Kazal domain (KD), initially characterized in pancreatic tissue as trypsin inhibitor (Rawlings et al, 2004).…”

“…Nowadays, the EST-based strategy is commonly employed for identifying expressed genes in species of interest [48,49]. This approach has been successfully used to compile a lists of genes expressed in venom's glands of a wide range of animals [50][51][52][53].…”

“…Nowadays, the EST-based strategy is commonly used for identifying a large number of genes in species of interest [96,97] . This approach has been suc-cessfully used to generate lists of genes expressed in different venom glands to improve knowledge about toxin diversity in the venom [98][99][100][101] . The identification of genes expressed in cells of a tissue is a basic step to provide essential information about gene function and tissue physiology.…”
