Essential Role of Potassium in Apple and Its Implications for Management of Orchard Fertilization

Abstract: K (K) is of paramount importance for apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.), not only for tree growth and development but also for the size and quality of fruit yield. The apple plant’s demand for K varies, along with the progression of phenological phases, during the growing season. The K demand peaks during ripening of fruits featuring relatively high concentration of K comparable to that of the leaves. The mainstream method of apple tree K fertilization is through application of the fertilizer to the soils to imp… Show more

“…The issue of potassium is also closely related to clay content [74]. On average, Norwegian soils have higher K contents than soils in Sweden and Finland [68], which is important for apple production [77]. An important factor of Norwegian soils is the presence of some nutrients derived from the parent rock or its sediments.…”

“…As expected, the most profuse macro-element concentrated in the leaves was N throughout the experiment, followed by K and Ca, with the latter two also found in high concentrations in the soil where the trial was established. The balanced uptake by the plants of K and Ca is considered essential for fruit crops like apples [50,51].…”
