Essential oils of the inflorescences and leaves ofZiziphora brevicalyx

Medicinal plants play an important role in the treatment of a wide range of diseases, even if their chemical constituents are not always completely recognized. Observations on their use and efficacy significantly contribute to the disclosure of their therapeutic properties. Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi is an aromatic herb with a mint-oregano flavor, used in the Mediterranean areas as a traditional medicine. It has an extensive range of biological activities, including antimicrobial, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, as well as anti-ulcer and insecticidal properties. This study aims to review the scientific findings and research reported to date on Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi that prove many of the remarkable various biological actions, effects and some uses of this species as a source of bioactive natural compounds. On the other hand, pulegone, the major chemical constituent of Calamintha nepeta (L.) Savi essential oil, has been reported to exhibit numerous bioactivities in cells and animals. Thus, this integrated overview also surveys and interprets the present knowledge of chemistry and analysis of this oxygenated monoterpene, as well as its beneficial bioactivities. Areas for future research are suggested.

Essential oils as secondary metabolites, promising sources of biologically active substances with pronounced antimicrobial, antifungal and antiviral effects, are of considerable interest for study and possible use in medicine, pharmaceuticals, and aromatherapy. We have studied the composition of the essential oil of an endemic species for the first time Perovskia scrophularifolia Bunge. (Lamiaceae = Labiatae). This species of plant is of considerable interest as a medicinal plant, which is widely used in folk medicine in Uzbekistan and neighboring countries. Studies of biologically active substances of this species did not concern the essential oil. During the period of mass flowering in the inflorescences of Perovskia scrophularifolia contains 0.65%, in leaves – 0.71% of essential oil. The stems of the plant contain essential oils in small quantities. The composition and content of the components of the studied samples were determined according to the data of gas chromatographic and chromate-mass-spectrometric analysis. 26 substances were identified in essential oils from leaves, 43 from inflorescences and 18 substances from stems. The main components of essential oils from leaves and inflorescences are 1,8-Cineol up to 19.3% and Isobornyl acetate – up to 15.9%. This species is a promising source of biologically active compounds with biological activity (including antibiotic).

Plants of the Lamiaceae family are important ornamental, medicinal, and aromatic plants, many of which produce essential oils that are used in traditional and modern medicine, and in the food, cosmetics, and pharmaceutical industry. Various species of the genera Hyssopus, Leonurus, Mentha, Nepeta, Origanum, Perovskia, Phlomis, Salvia, Scutellaria, and Ziziphora are widespread throughout the world, are the most popular plants in Uzbek traditional remedies, and are often used for the treatment of wounds, gastritis, infections, dermatitis, bronchitis, and inflammation. Extensive studies of the chemical components of these plants have led to the identification of many compounds, as well as essentials oils, with medicinal and other commercial values. The purpose of this review is to provide a critical overview of the literature surrounding the traditional uses, ethnopharmacology, biological activities, and essential oils composition of aromatic plants of the family Lamiaceae, from the Uzbek flora.
