Anaesthesia is a widely used tool in fish handling, sampling and surgery in aquaculture; thus, fish anaesthesiology has been studied for a long time. In this case, there are several common anaesthetics in aquaculture, namely tricaine methanesulfonate (a chemical agent) and clove oil (a natural agent). Recently, there was an increasing interest to use herbal materials (other than clove oil) in fish anaesthesia. In this review, current knowledge about the use of herbal anaesthetics has been summarized. To date, essential oils/extracts of different plants have been studied for fish anaesthesia; most of them belong to Lamiaceae, Verbenaceae, Lauraceae and Myrtaceae. In addition, menthol, linalool, myrcene, cineole, globulol, spathulenol, guaiol, caryophyllene oxide, terpinen-4-ol and dehydrofukinone are herbal compounds that their anaesthetic effects have been studied in fish. Compared with clove oil and eugenol as the most common herbal anaesthetic, all tested herbal materials are less efficacious to anaesthetize fish. Some plants' essential oil/extract, namely Aloysia triphylla, Myrcia sylvatica, Lippia alba and Curcuma longa, have beneficial health effects including suppression of physiological and oxidative stress. There is a lack of data in mechanism of anaesthesia and health effects of the herbal anaesthetics, which should be followed in future studies. In addition, most of the current studies have focused on certain fish species such as silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen), tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum) and common carp (Cyprinus carpio), and in most of the studies, essential oils/extracts of South American plants have been used. Thus, there is a need to study other fish and plant species.

Anaesthetic efficacy and biochemical effects of 1,8-cineole in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss , Walbaum, 1792)

The aim of the present study was to investigate the anaesthetic efficacy and biochemical effects of 1,8-cineole (cineole) in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). The fish were exposed to 200, 300, 400, 500, 600 and 800 ll/L cineole and time of induction of anaesthesia and recovery from anaesthesia were recorded. Thereafter, the fish haematological and biochemical responses to anaesthesia with different concentrations of cineole were studies. Moreover, the haematological and biochemical response of fish anaesthetized for 300 s with either cineole (283 ll/L) or eugenol (25 ll/L) were compared. Cineole at the concentrations of 200-800 ll/L induced stages 2, 3 and 4 anaesthesia within 109-29.3, 226-59 and 418-117 s respectively. Increase in anaesthesia induction time led to higher stress responses and enzymes' activity characterized by elevation in red blood cell (RBC), white blood cell (WBC), blood haematocrit and haemoglobin, and plasma cortisol, glucose and lactate levels, and aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), lactate dehydrogenase and creatine phosphokinase (CPK) activities. However, cineole concentrations had no significant effects on plasma alanine aminotransferase (ALT) activity and ions levels. Comparison of cineole with eugenol showed that cineole showed less change in blood RBC and plasma AST, ALP, CPK, cortisol and glucose levels compared to eugenol. In conclusion, cineole is efficient to anaesthetize trout at concentrations of 200-800 ll/L. Increase in cineole concentration shortens anaesthesia induction time, stress response and probably tissue damage. The concentrations of 600-800 ll/L cineol is recommended for rapid sampling as it causes the least stress and enzymatic responses. The use of biopolymers such as cyclodextrin in textiles for the development of biofunctional fabrics is an alternative for the development of eco-friendly textiles. Cyclodextrins can create covalent interactions with the chemical groups available in wool, allowing the sorption of active molecules that will be released, such as the citronella oil. Therefore, this work investigates the formation of cyclodextrin complex oil applied in wool and its release mechanism. The complexes obtained and the grafted fabric were characterized by TGA, DLS, FTIR-ATR and SEM. The release of citronella oil was also analyzed and mathematical adjustments were performed using the equation of Korsmeyer-Peppas to verify the release mechanism. The results have indicated the formation of the complex and its fixation by covalent bonding, according to the FTIR-ATR specter and the SEM, and these have shown an anomalous release profile. For this reason, the application of the complexes in wool fabrics has shown to be an option in the production of eco-friendly biofunctional materials for controlled release, allowing the oil properties to be used in textile matrices.
