Essential oil composition of the aerial parts of Cachrys sicula L.

Abstract: The oil constituents from the aerial parts of Cachrys sicula L., gathered in different locations of Spain, have been studied by GC and GC-MS. We have analysed the oil from the fruits, flowers, stems and leaves, and umbels' rays. The major constituents in the different oils analysed were found to be p-cymene (7.3-36

“…De Leo and coworkers isolated the three coumarins 8-hydroxymethylpsoralen, sprengelianin, and oxypeucedanin from the dried leaf extract [ 15 ]. Palá-Paúl et al [ 16 ] also investigated the chemical composition of the essential oil of C. sicula aerial parts and reported the presence of many terpenes, while Pinar [ 17 ] isolated the diamine N-N′-di-o-tolylethylendiamine. Some photodermatitis agents have been identified in C. libanotis [ 18 ] and the presence of various terpenes have been detected in its essential oil [ 19 ].…”

“…Phytochemical investigation of C. sicula has also dealt with identification of various furanocoumarins, among which are isoimperatorin, imperatorin, bergapten, xanthotoxin, isopimpinellin, tert-o-methylheraclenol, (-)-prantschimgin, (-)-sprengelianin, ulopterol and saxalin (7). Palà-Paúl et al (8) also investigated chemical composition of essential oils of the aerial parts of C. sicula, and identified many terpenes, while Pinar (9) isolated diamine N-N¢-di-o-tolylethylendiamine. Phytochemical composition of C. libanotis L. was also investigated; 5-methoxypsoralen, 8-methoxypsoralen, 5,8-dimethoxypsoralen from the alcoholic extract (10), and various terpenes from the essential oil (11) were identified.…”

“…The classification of the Cachrys genus has been somewhat confused. According to Tutin (1968), this genus included also Prangos Lindley and Hippomarathrum Link, while in 1872, Boissier had classified them into three different genera [ 15 , 16 , 17 ].…”
