The dried root of Saposhnikovia divaricata (Turcz.) Schischk. is popular as a good medicinal material, however the abundant aerial part is often discarded, which caused the waste of resources. In order to exploit resources, the essential oils of the plant aerial part and root were extracted, separately called as VOA and VOR, their chemicals were identified. The tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, nitric oxide and interleukin-1β were detected to evaluate the oils anti-inflammatory activities. Then, the oils free radical scavenging rates were measured with DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl free radical. The oils antitumor activities were evaluated with HeLa and HCT-8 cancer cell lines. The results showed the concentrations of VOA and VOR were separately 0.261% and 0.475%. Seventeen components of VOA were identified, accounting for 80.48% of VOA, including phytol, spathulenol, phytone, 4(15),5,10(14)-Germacratrien-1-ol, neophytadiene, etc. Seven components of VOR were determined, representing 90.73% of VOR, consisted of panaxynol, β-bisabolene, etc. VOA and VOR significantly inhibited the secretion of nitric oxide, interleukin-1β, interleukin‐6 and tumor necrosis factor-α, effectively scavenged the DPPH, ABTS and hydroxyl free radicals, and showed significant antiproliferative activity against HeLa and HCT-8. The two oils presented important biological activity, which provided a hopeful utilized basis, and helped to reduce the waste of the aerial non-medicinal resources of S. divaricata.

Seseli libanotis is an aromatic umbelliferous plant distributed sporadically on dry grassland edges in Europe and Western Asia. The essential oil composition in the different plant parts was studied from plants collected on nine sites in Austria and one site in Alto Adige, Italy. Monoterpenes such as α‐pinene, sabinene and β‐myrcene and the sesquiterpene germacrene D were present in all essential oils from the aerial parts. Inflorescences and fruits had the highest essential oil contents. These essential oils from four sites were rich in acorenone B, while from other three sites they had carotol as a major component. Osthole as furocoumarin occurred in some oils. The root essential oils were dominated by α‐pinene. The essential oil variability has been studied by principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis (DA) with plant parts or sampling site as a priori groups. PCA could well separate inflorescence and fruit essential oil samples from leaf and stem essential oil samples. DA differentiated well between the plant parts and most of the sampling sites.

Background/Aim. Phytochemical and pharmacological investigations of essential oils isolated from plant species of the genus Seseli have been intensified recently. These plant species have long-term use in nutrition and traditional medicine in the treatment of various disorders. Volatile secondary metabolites of Seseli gracile Waldst. & Kit (Apiaceae) have not been pharmacologically examined so far. The aim of the conducted research was to assess the antiradical, antimicrobial and spasmolytic activities of S. gracile essential oil isolated from the aerial parts of the plant. Methods. The antiradical activity was determined using the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging test, antimicrobial activity using broth microdilution method with standard strains of Gram (+), Gram (-) bacteria and yeast, while spasmolytic activity was evaluated on isolated rat ileum, pre-contracted with a high concentration of potassium. Results. The results showed moderate antiradical (SC50 = 78,60 µg/mL) and good spasmolytic activity (IC50 = 271.4 nL/mL) of S. gracile essential oil. In the range of tested concentrations, minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) was determined only for the strain of Escherichia coli (500 μg/ml). Conclusion. Results obtained in this study justify the need for further studies to elucidate exact molecular mechanism underlay this spasmolytic effect of S. gracile herb essential oil.
