Abstract: This paper complements the current dialogue on improving the understanding of grounded theory methodology in nursing research. The paper also suggests important procedural decisions researchers need to make to preserve their studies' scientific merit and fit with grounded theory.

“…Instead of deductively obtained techniques, it is a theory that is consecutively obtained through "social research" and is grounded in data (Goulding, 1998). GT has emerged as a widely adopted approach across the social sciences field, as it provides researchers the flexibility to develop, test and strengthen new theories from their research data (Achora and Matua, 2016;Hussein et al, 2020). Therefore, the present study used the ground theory approach for the qualitative data analysis.…”

“…In contrast to deductively obtained methods, it is a theory that is systematically obtained through "social" research and is grounded in data (Goulding 1998). It has emerged as a widely-used research approach across the social sciences, particularly nursing and the health sciences, as it gives researchers the flexibility to develop, test, and strengthen new theories from their research data in cases when no suitable theory has yet been formulated (Achora and Matua 2016).…”

“…Before commencing the project considerable effort was made to gain an adequate level of competence in the methodology, through supervision, training courses, reading texts, discussion in a qualitative forum and ABI research group with other trainee clinical psychologists, and lectures with an interest in qualitative and ABI research. It has been suggested that novice researchers should conform to the tenets of a specific GT tradition (Creswell, 2013) in order to understand fully the philosophical assumptions and procedural steps (Achora & Matua, 2016), and the researcher followed the steps outlined by Charmaz .…”
