Instructing others to move is fundamental for many populations, whether animal or cellular. In many instances, these commands are transmitted by contact, such that an instruction is relayed directly (e.g. by touch) from signaller to receiver: for cells, this can occur via receptor-ligand mediated interactions at their membranes, potentially at a distance if a cell extends long filopodia. Given that commands ranging from attractive to repelling can be transmitted over variable distances and between cells of the same (homotypic) or different (heterotypic) type, these mechanisms can clearly have a significant impact on the organisation of a tissue. In this paper, we extend a system of nonlocal partial differential equations (integrodifferential equations) to provide a general modelling framework to explore these processes, performing linear stability and numerical analyses to reveal its capacity to trigger the self-organisation of tissues. We demonstrate the potential of the framework via two illustrative applications: the contact-mediated dispersal of neural crest populations and the self-organisation of pigmentation patterns in zebrafish.

The intestinal epithelium is composed of diverse cell types, most abundant being the enterocytes. Among other functions, they maintain the intestinal barrier and play a critical role in the absorption of nutrients, drugs and toxins. This study describes the development and characterization of human intestinal epithelial cells (HUIEC), a spontaneously arising cell line established by selective trypsinization and cloning of the intestinal epithelium, resulting in a uniform population of highly epithelial cells with a strong growth potential.

ResumenDurante la ultima década hemos vivido una creciente aplicación de técnicas propias de las ingenierías a la biología.Áreas como la Biología de Sistemas o, más recientemente, la Biología Sintética, reciben una atención cada vez mayor por parte de los ingenieros. En particular, el modelado en estosámbitos permite la generación de nuevas hipótesis contrastables experimentalmente, y de nuevas formas de intervención biológica, así como explicaciones más o menos mecanicistas de los resultados experimentales. Una aproximación basada en modelo requiere considerar la dinámica de las reacciones bioquímicas y su regulación. En la primera parte de este tutorial se introducen el modelado determinista y reducción de modelos de la clase de reacciones bioquímicas propias de la biología molecular celular.El ruido juega un papel crucial en la dinámica de los circuitos biológicos. En elárea de control automático hay una larga tradición de modelado mediante ecuaciones diferenciales estocásticas lineales, bajo la hipótesis simplificadora de asumir que el ruido tiene una magnitud independiente de la del estado. Esta hipótesis no es válida en los circuitos biológicos. En la segunda parte del tutorial se describen los métodos de modelado estocástico más usados en biología molecular, con especial atención a denominada aproximación lineal del ruido.
