One of the crucial issues in Indonesia is climate change. It can jeopardize Indonesia's sustainable development. This article investigates a carbon tax as a climate policy option in Indonesia and the Directorate General of Taxes readiness in imposing the new carbon tax bill in April 2022. This research analyzes the early stage of carbon tax implementation in Indonesia. The author conducted a qualitative questionnaire to a small and unrepresentative sample of 32 tax officers in the DGT's head office, regional office, and small tax office in Jakarta. The data collecting process took place in January 2022. The results suggest that most DGT's employees in this study are already familiar with the term "climate change", its causes, and its effects as a worldwide global catastrophe. Furthermore, most respondents understand what a carbon tax is but in terms of preparedness to implement the new carbon tax, only 21 of 32 employees (65.6 percent) believe Indonesia is prepared to impose the new tax. At the same time, 11 employees doubt the implementation due to lack of human resources, derived rules, and regulation dissemination.

Taking on Climate Change Through Green Taxation

One of the main climatic concerns is the increase of CO2 concentrations in the atmosphere. In the attempt and need to combat this problem, several regulatory policies have been applied in several countries by the governments, with the carbon tax being one of the most economical and effective policies in reducing CO2 emissions, thus leading to an increase in scientific research on this topic. Therefore, the main objective of this study is characterizing the existing research on the theme Carbon Tax. A sample of 121 scientific articles was collected, where several characteristics related to the content of published articles and respective authors were subsequently identified. The results obtained reveal that the number of publications has been increasing, and the themes most related to this investigation are: cap-and-trade, carbon dioxide emissions, climate change, computable general equilibrium (cge) model and emissions. Regarding the profile of researchers, the type of collective authorship is the most common and the country with the most affiliated authors is China.

Environmental pollution (EP) and global warming (GW), which emerged with industrialization, have become an increasing global problem in recent years. Greenhouse gases (GHGs) resulting from EP forced countries to introduce carbon tax (CT). This study aims to examine the effect of environmental taxes (ETs), renewable energy consumption (REC), and economic growth (EG) on environmental quality (EQ) in 12 countries with the highest carbon emissions (CEs) over the period 1998-2019. The long-term AMG estimation results showed that ETs and REC reduced EP while EG deteriorates EQ in the countries included in the analysis. Nonetheless, Dumitrescu and Hurlin's (D-H) causality test results indicated that a bilateral causality existed between REC and EG and CEs, whereas a unilateral causality existed from ETs to CEs. Therefore, it is important to implement more effective policies to increase ETs and REC in terms of a sustainable environment in the relevant countries.
