ESR imaging investigations of two‐phase systems

Abstract: The possibilities of electron spin resonance (ESR) and electron spin resonance imaging (ESRI) for investigating the properties of the spin probes TEMPO and TEMPOL in two-phase systems have been examined in the systems water/n-octanol, Miglyol/Miglyol, and Precirol/Miglyol. Phases and regions of the phase boundary could be mapped successfully by means of the isotropic hyperfine coupling constants, and, moreover, the quantification of rotational and lateral diffusion of the spin probes was possible. For the quan… Show more

“…Representative ESR tracings in Figure 6A show the 3 characteristic Tempol spectral signals 19 in plasma samples from Tempol-treated C57 and BPH/5 mice (no signals were detected in any samples from non-treated mice, data not shown). Analysis of the Tempol-associated spectral peak heights revealed the presence of significant amounts of Tempol in the plasma that were similar in C57 and BPH/5 (6 to 7 mol/L) ( Figure 5B).…”

“…In particular, many groups have obtained both high oxygen and spatial resolution images of oxygen in the tumors of mice from cw ESR imaging (ESRI) at radiofrequency . ESRI is widely used to study the free radical distribution in biological systems in the USA, Japan and other countries (Sotgiu et al, 1998;He et al, 2002He et al, , 2004Utsumi and Yamada, 2003;Herrmann et al, 2007). However, there is no in vivo ESR system in Korea.…”

“…The frequently determined “mean value” of ĝ mainly inform about the nature of the participating heavy atoms in the paramagnetic centre. For free electrons a value of g e = 2.0023 was determined, while nitroxyl spin probes have value around 2.05 [6,7,37], and for heavy ion like Cu 2+ it will be around 2.2 [38].…”

“…For that purpose 15 N-TEMPO was dissolved in Precirol ® , while 14 N-TEMPOL was dissolved in Miglyol ® and brought into contact within a capillary tube. The spectral-spatial images and the respective spectra in different depths show the progress of the distribution after 5 and 240 min [37], respectively, are displayed in Figure 14.…”
