The sustainable use of productive resources by agricultural producers in the central valley of Chile should be compatible with economic results so that producers can select an appropriate rotation or succession of annual crops and pasture. The objective of this work was to evaluate the economic behavior of four food crop and supplementary forage rotations using indicators of profitability and profit variability. Productive data were used from a long-term experiment (16 yr) in the central valley of Chile under conditions of irrigation. With productive data and information on historic input/output prices, the real net margin per rotation (RNMR) and its coefficient of variation (CV) were determined. The results indicated that the highest economic benefits and greatest economic stability were obtained with rotations that only included crops, namely sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L. subsp. vulgaris)-wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)-bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.)-barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) (CR2) and corn (Zea mays L.)-wheat-bean-barley (CR4). These rotations included crops with low CV of the net margin, such as wheat, barley and beans, with values between 0.31 and 0.34. The rotations with crops and pasture, sugar beet-wheat-red clover (Trifolium pratense L.) (2) (CR1) and corn-wheat-red clover (2) (CR3) had lower net margins and more variability of this indicator. Red clover had the highest CV value (1.00). The selection of crops for rotations and their sequence were determining factors in the economic behavior of rotations, affecting the level of RNMR and the degree of inter-annual variability of this indicator. Thus, differences among rotations of 47% in net margin were determined (CR2 vs. CR1), which only differed in the replacement of pasture with red clover (2) by bean-barley. The economic analysis based on the net margin and its variability allow for discriminating among rotations, providing valuable information for producers in deciding which crops to use in rotations.

Soil respiration is a very important component of the global carbon cycle, considered as the second most important carbon (C) flux to the atmosphere and is directly affected by global warming (Xu & Qi, 2001; Bond-Lamberty et al., 2004; Arredondo et al., 2018). It is defined as the sum of autotrophic respiration (i.e. roots and fungi) and heterotrophic respiration (i.e. soil microorganisms that break down organic matter and soil fauna) and is influenced by environmental factors, such as soil and ambient temperature, water content and photosynthetically active radiation (Raich & Schlesinger, 1992; Zimmermann et al., 2009; Cueva et al., 2016). ResumenEn México las leguminosas forrajeras más utilizadas para clima templado son las alfalfas y tréboles que, aunque poseen buenas características nutritivas, no se adaptan a todo tipo de suelos y climas, tienen demandas de agua de media a altas y causan timpanismo. Por tal motivo, el presente estudio tuvo como objetivo conocer el potencial agronómico y nutritivo de 12 genotipos de Lotus corniculatus L., especie que prospera en condiciones de temporal, en un amplio rango de pH y no causa timpanismo. El experimento se estableció en un suelo arcilloso en Montecillo, Texcoco, Estado de México en un diseño de bloques al azar con cuatro repeticiones. Se realizaron siete cortes, con una frecuencia de 45 días. Las variables medidas fueron producción de forraje (PF), altura de planta (AP), fibras detergentes neutro y ácido (FDN, FDA), digestibilidad in vitro (DIV) y proteína cruda (PC). Para el análisis de digestibilidad y proteína se realizaron mezclas de cortes por estación del año. Los datos fueron analizados como un arreglo de parcelas divididas, donde la parcela mayor fueron los genotipos y como parcela menor los cortes. Las variedades y accesiones mostraron diferencias en PF, FDN, FDA, PC y DIV (P ≤ 0.001). Se concluye que el Lotus corniculatus L., reúne buenas características agronómicas, pues llega a producir en promedio hasta 7,400 kg MS ha -1 al año con porcentajes de digestibilidad hasta del 76 al 79 % y del 18 al 22.6% de proteína cruda. De los 12 genotipos evaluados, se encontró que 10 de ellos tuvieron mayor potencial productivo y de calidad.
