Esophageal papillomatosis complicated by squamous cell carcinoma in situ

Abstract: We present a case of esophageal papillomatosis with underlying squamous cell carcinoma in situ. An esophageal lesion resected from a 74-year-old woman demonstrated histological findings characteristic of squamous cell papilloma (fibrovascular core and numerous finger-like projections covered with hyperplastic squamous epithelium) and severe dysplasia characteristic of squamous cell carcinoma. The relation of squamous papilloma and squamous cell carcinoma is discussed. It is suggested that esophageal squamous c… Show more

“…Development of extensive esophageal squamous papillomas, otherwise known as squamous papillomatosis of the esophagus, is even less common. Review of the English literature identifies only eight cases of papillomatosis of the esophagus (3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)(9)(10). The first reported case involved a patient who received treatment with laser evaporation and alpha-interferon, followed by bleomycin and etoposide phosphate (4).…”

“…Narayani et al (8) reported the development of high-grade dysplasia in a verrucous-appearing esophagus, with earlier biopsies showing changes only consistent with squamous papillomatosis. Reynoso et al (9) presented a case of squamous carcinoma in situ within esophageal papillomatosis, diagnosed after esophagectomy. Biopsies obtained endoscopically did not demonstrate carcinoma.…”

“…In 1995, Reed et al 5 described a case of a 75-year-old woman in whom an oesophageal papilloma was associated with adenocarcinoma of the oesophagus, marking the first reported case of the malignant potential of this previously believed benign lesion 6. Waluga et al 7 and Reynoso et al 8 reported a poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus and an oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma in situ, respectively (in oesophagectomy specimens) in the settings of oesophageal squamous papillomatosis. Narayani and Young9 also reported development of high-grade dysplasia in the setting of oesophageal papillomatosis.…”
