“…7 They also reported that more serious postoperative complications such as cyst recurrence, diverticula, strictures, and chylothorax occurred in patients whose muscle layer was left open. 7 However, a few patients who underwent muscle layer closure developed postoperative GERD despite the absence of preoperative GERD symptoms. Closure of the muscle layer after resection may potentially increase the likelihood of developing GERD, but other possible causes include alteration of the lower esophageal sphincter anatomy or injury to the vagus nerve.…”

“…The optimal technique for closure of the esophageal muscle layer after EDC resection remains controversial. Benedict et al reported that fewer complications occurred in patients who underwent muscle layer closure during the initial resection and that most patients who required reoperation had their muscle layer left open . They also reported that more serious postoperative complications such as cyst recurrence, diverticula, strictures, and chylothorax occurred in patients whose muscle layer was left open .…”

“…Closure may help to prevent a postoperative diverticulum, but this needs to be balanced with the risk of creating an esophageal stricture. Given the risk of creating an esophageal stricture, many surgeons do not close this defect . Given the large defect in our patient, we decided to allow it to heal secondarily in order to avoid fluid collecting in the cavity, which may lead to an infection.…”

“…Diagnosis of EDC is usually established before the age of 2 years when the patient develops symptoms (Watanobe et al 2015 ). Thoracic duct injury and development of chylothorax after excision of the esophageal duplication cyst is rare but known complication (Benedict et al 2016 ; Kapoor et al 2014 ). Here we describe a case of 2 year old child in which filtered Tc99m sulphur colloid lymphoscintigraphy and SPECT-CT helped in the diagnosing and localization of the chylothorax site.…”
