“…The prognosis of patients with esophageal cancer remains poor and only a subset of patients respond well to treatment (4,20). The current TNM classification cannot accurately predict clinical outcome for patients with ESCC (21), even for patients with identical clinicopathological risk factors.…”

“…Owing to the aggressive invasion, early metastasis, therapeutic resistance and other malignant biological behaviors of ESCC, the prognosis is poor, despite numerous efforts to develop effective therapeutic interventions, such as early detection, advanced surgical techniques and chemoradiotherapy (3). Therefore, it is important to identify novel molecular biomarkers to allow for the identification of high-risk patients that require prompt and tailored treatment (4). However, efforts to identify specific molecules associated with ESCC progression and prognosis have thus far been unsuccessful (5), to the best of our knowledge.…”

“…In esophageal (E) and gastro-esophageal junction (GEJ) cancer, there has been a steep rise in incidence in developed countries while the 5-year-survival remains as low as 19%. 1 It has been challenging for preclinical models of E/GEJ cancer to reproduce tumor characteristics and heterogeneity. Traditionally, E/GEJ cancer cell lines have been used either in vitro or injected into immunocompromised mice in order to study the effects of new therapeutics.…”

“…The proportion of EC in China comprises 70% of all cases of the disease in the world . The EC incidence in the Taihang mountain area and Chaoshan area of China exceeds 100/10 0000 (Su et al, 2007;Zhou et al, 2010) with survival rate of 5 years 3-5% (Kim et al, 2011). The pathological types of EC are mainly squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma.…”
