Esophageal cancer phospholipids correlated with histopathologic findings: a31P NMR study

Abstract: We analyzed 36 esophageal tumor specimens for phospholipid content using phosphorus nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (31P NMR) and correlated the individual phospholipid profiles with specific clinical and histopathologic features. Among the 18 phospholipids identified in the esophageal tumor specimens, the mean mole percentage concentration of dimethylphosphatidylethanolamine, lysoalkylacylphosphatidylcholine, lysophosphatidic acid, lysophosphatidylcholine (deacylated at the glycerol‐1 carbon), and lys… Show more

“…By multivariate analysis, Pomp et al found that overexpression of p53 resulted in a decrease in survival in 69 patients with squamous cell carcinoma or adenocarcinoma treated with radiation alone (Pomp et al, 1998). In one study, there was a correlation between decreasing levels of four phospholipids and increasing T stage and grade (Merchant et al, 1999).…”

“…On the basis of the data from the spectra of PBMC received from patients with AL (AML P and ALL P ), it was claimed that the integral intensities of resonant peaks due to SM and PS and the concentrations of these phospholipids are significantly diminished in comparison with those for healthy volunteers. Similar differences were observed by Merchant et al, who investigated malignant changes in the tissues of the esophagus and colon [11,12].…”

“…A number of these studies regard the lipophilic component of healthy and neoplastic human tissue 1–12. The role of lipids in the life and death of healthy and neoplastic cells is thus well highlighted 13.…”
